I'm trying not to be too old school on this topic because I've always believed that when a player gets in the end zone he should act like you've been there before. Having said that I also think that a quick celebration is a good thing both from the players and the fans perspective. It's not easy to score a TD & I think the game officials should take into consideration who got the ball there before they start reaching for the flag, if a big old bubba from the O or D line find the endzone they should be afforded a bit of a license to celebrate if in fact they still have the energy to do so. All other players should have to stay within specific parameters but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to enjoy the accomplishment.
I think for me when it started to get out of hand was when I saw CFL teams like the Stamps & the Bombers have set performances at the ready that included 5 or 6 other players. To me allowing that was saying to the team that just got scored on, we'll let them stick you face in it and most of the guys I played with and against would have started a brawl in the endzone.
Then the celebration took and other step with Mr.Owens (as an Eagle) racing to center field after scoring a major against Dallas at Cowboy stadium and raising his arms in celebration all the while standing on the Dallas logo, remember what happened next.
Other examples are Chad Johnson hiding a Sharpie in his sock and signing the ball or having a cell phone hidden in the goal post pad, there are plenty of other examples and they all smack of one thing, IT"S ALL ABOUT ME and that goes against everything I stand for when it comes to a team sport. The head coaches needed to have some balls and take control of their team and how they handled themselves on the field.
Today I heard reports that the NCAA is looking at penalizing a team/player for pre TD celebrations or taunting of your opponent as you enter the endzone, now this will be interesting. What the heck will the penalty be in this case, 15 yds against the kick off team, push the extra point back 15yds (which is lame) or do they take away the TD but the team maintains pocession of the ball at the 25yd line.
So keep a close eye on how this issue is dealt with over the next few months but I wouldn't be surprised to see the NCAA come down on this and just think if they had nipped it in the bud 15 yrs ago instead of letting theses players act like they owned the game.
