Now that the N.H.L.pre-season has been completed, there are many excited fans of at least one team I can think of, who are having dreams of Stanley Cup parades and seeing their team returned to glory. I'm not saying that it's absolutely impossible for miracles to occur, but let's be real, they rarely do when you're talking about bottom feeders becoming championship caliber.Now of course while folks are reading this they're thinking 'well geez, I'm not one of those crazy fans who said my team can win the Stanley Cup'.The truth is that with pre-season games on TV, there is more hype about teams as well as individual players, and the networks televising these games tend to analyze the players and teams as though they are mid-season matches. I may have missed something, but there is not a lot of mention of the fact that during the N.H.L. pre-season, the visiting team is only required to bring a limited number of roster players with for the road game.In addition to that, most if not all coaches use the exhibition games to experiment with line combinations,and give a lot of ice time to minor league players,and prospects. I recently spoke with my good friend Bob Tindal,who was a professional scout with the Boston Bruins for 30 years. Bob told me that in terms of evaluating a National Hockey League team, most Coaches and G.M.'s require 20 or so games of regular season play to get a read on their rosters.With this in mind, you can see why it would be sheer lunacy to come to any conclusions about individuals or clubs during the pre-season. Twenty or thirty years ago, most fans hardly paid any attention to these games. It is only with the addition of TV coverage and the over-hype associated with it, that some tend to read way too much into a September N.H.L. game. There aren't any parades scheduled for the Canadian Football League, but with the excellent season that it has had so far, it is certainly deserving of one.The revitalization of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats has been a great story. Set aside their Saturday stinker against Montreal,because the rest of the season has been sensational. Finally, their long suffering fans have been rewarded with a team they can be proud of.The Saskatchewan - Edmonton game at Commonwealth Stadium in front of 62,000 fans Saturday night is the ultimate testimony to just how solid this season has been so far for the C.F.L. In a time of serious economic concern for most Canadians, the big crowds coming out to watch the games this year are an endorsement of the league as exciting and affordable entertainment. If that energy and enthusiasm can ever be generated in the enigmatic markets of Toronto and Vancouver, just imagine how exciting that would be for the Canadian game.Even the battle of the bottom feeders with Winnipeg and Toronto became a heated and entertaining contest in the 4th quarter at Canad Inns Stadium. When the weakest teams can put on a good show, you know you've got a good product and the Canadian Football League certainly seems to be an excellent one right now.
